Second Floor Office Project - September 2000

Throughout late August and September we've been primarily working on refinishing the upstairs office. This was previously the guest room, but our plans are to move our office to the second floor and have the guest room on the first floor. This keeps the second floor "private" space and the first floor public.

The room was in pretty OK shape compared to others in the house. The trim/woodwork was all painted, of course, and it started with a green carpet.

officeBefore This shows some of what was going on in the room before we started. While it's not easy to see, the green carpet peeks out. While Mark had refinished the door a while back, the woodwork around the door is still white, like the mop boards and window trim.

officeStep1 This is another picture of the room early in the process. Mark had put the stripper on one window, but you can see the other window still white.

officeFloorStep1 This shows the room in a much later state. We've taken out the green carpet, the carpets backing, the linoleum tiles under the carpet and the mastic that held the tiles down. What a mess (and lot of work!!). You can also see that the first stage of stripping the wood trim is nearly complete. The windows and mop boards have had the majority of pain stripped. Some of the wood in the closet (sort of visible) is still painted though.

officeDoorBefore officeDoorAfter Here's a before and after shot of the closet door. It originally had the octagonal top which was period, but not a particularly lovable detail. The squared entry will work better with the door treatment we are planning, though the top of the door isn't a level as we'd like. We'll eventually have wood trim around the door and a period door curtain across the top.

officeFloopStep2 This is the floor after the drum sander and edger (and Marks back) had at it for two weekends. It looks great! We're only hours from staining it here. The trim in the closet has also been stripped now (so we are done stripping wood for this room, though there is still a lot of detail work to be done before the trim is complete.

bsmntBefore bsmntAfter While not related at all to the office project, we have also make a start on re-orienting the access to the basement stairs from the kitchen to the dining room.
