Porch renovation - Week 5 (Jun 25-Jul 7)

Work centered on finishing the column bases, installing the columns, trimming out the columns and base and finally installing a ceiling. Work remaining at this point includes instlaling the railings between columns, siding the skirt around the porch base, recasing the east and north east windows and the front door and residing the north/front of the house.

We've also decided to upgrade the lighting package a bit. In addition to the two overhead fixtures and the entry way coach light, we've decided to put small low-volt halogens at the top of each column washing down. This came around as we were deciding how and where to mount the house number plaque and how folks would see it at night. When we tried it out wuth a flash light, it looked great. So I ran low-volt wiring in the ceiling (just before the sealed it up) and ordered the low volt fixtures.

The columns are basically complete here. Since the last photos, the 4x4 supports have been wrapped with the final columns, horizontal cross peices and keys have been installed and the trim pieces around the top and base of each column installed. The black on the column base is felt paper - the final siding will be installed over it.

End of the week. The columns are done. The details are installed, the siding on the bases is in place and the ceiling is installed (beaded boards).

And from the west
And a shot from below showing the installed ceiling. You also get a different perspective on the column details here - the horizontal cross pieces about 1/3 from the top show much better.
