Siding Removal Project, July 5th 1999

July 5th - lets get serious. It was near 100 today and the "heat index" had it near 115F. Only idiots work on days like this. Since we're not idiots, we just did a scaled back day. We had originally planned to do the west wall of the house (the other "big" wall), but between the temperature and our neighbors having guests over, we decided to put that off til Tuesday (the sixth).

We removed the siding from the rear of the house first. This was a pretty small job because most of the rear is covered by a condemned porch that will be torn down soon (so we didn't waste time on it). Here's what it looked like after we got the siding off (you can click on any image to see a larger version):

When done, we worked on the front porch again. Yeah, we thought we were done, but we both hated how the skirt around the porch looked with the nailers for the old siding still up. Believe it or not, removing them made a big improvement. Mark also took the time to remove the fascia boards from the front of the porch and the dormer. While the house most likely did not have fascia boards on the rafter tails you can now see, we'll probably have to put them back up to install new gutters, when we get to that point.

By this point in the project, with three sides done, we've created quite a pile of garbage. We'll probably bring it to the dump Wednesday, after the West siding has been added to the heap.

Well, that is it for the day. We edged the lawn (took about 10 quarts of water and three breaks before that was done) and are just trying to avoid moving much for the rest of the day. We've both racked up some seriously battered bodies (lots of cuts/scratches/bruises) and have a deep ache in nearly every part of us. I guess we asked for it...
