Siding Removal Project - July 3, 1999

Today we started the siding removal project. For the last 35 years, the house had been clad in aluminum siding. Under the siding is wood clapboards. The aluminum was put on in 1964 (roughly) and with any luck, was put on well enough that the underlying clapboards are still in good shape.

Here is the east face of the house, just before the removal project as about to begin (you can click on an image to see a larger version):

Here are things after the siding on the lower half of the east side of the house was removed. If you can see where the blue second story is starting to be exposed, there are brown, stained shingles! Yeah!!

Next was installing the scaffolding so we could strip the siding from the second floor.

Here is Gerry at the top of the scaffolding (trust me, it's me).

Here is a view taken from the top of the scaffolding of the neighborhood.

The siding is almost off the second floor!

And the final product! The shingles on the second floor are in excellent shape - never been painted. The soffits are in needs of some help. We left the aluminum shells around the window openings. While there is wood under there, between the aluminum siding installation and replacing the old wood double hung windows with vinyl ones, the window casings are going to need some work.
