Guest Room Renovation

This spring we reworked the guest room. When we moved in, the room had white walls, white painted woodwork and the only original wood floor in the house. The base boards in the room had been replaced at some point with "paint grade" wood, so stripping them was out. The window and door, though heavily painted, were original, so we decided to strip them.

We Replaced the base boards and installed shoe molding that matched the rest of the first floor woodwork. The floor itself had been refinished when the rest o the first floor floors were refinished the previous year.

The room was given a deep green color that is nicely mottled with the same sponge-off scheme we used in the front rooms of the house. Mark stenciled checkerberries on the upper corners of the room to match the hand sewn curtains (window and closet) that Marks Mom created for us. We replaced the old guest bed with a folding futon so that this room could also serve as Marks office.

The final guest room, showing the futon, curtains, stripped wood and Marks stenciling.

This is a footstool one of Marks friends gave us. Mark took the worn upholstery off, refitted the "deck" and reuphostered it with the same leather used for the chairs in the study. It now rests in the Guest Room. You can also see the base boards and checkerberry pattern of the curtain hanging over the closet.
